As the world seems to be crumbling around us (morally, spiritually, and in some ways- physically) are you wondering how to thrive? Are you craving a healthy attitude? Are you determined to flourish, regardless of what comes at you?

Thankfully, Jesus taught explicitly on this subject. The beatitudes in Matthew 5:1-12 are perhaps His most famous teachings ever given. Totally countercultural, anti-positive psychology, and gritty. Not to mention: completely freeing. The top eight ways to be blessed do NOT include things many of us might expect, like work harder, attend church more, learn better methods of self-care, or give your money to the church.

Does even one of these apply to you today?

  • You feel low (Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven)
  • You feel sad (Blessed are those who mourn, or they will be comforted)
  • You feel little and helpless (Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth)
  • You want so badly for the world to change its ways, to begin living right and healthy (Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled)
  • You try to err on the side of compassion, rather than harsh judgment (Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy).
  • You don’t want to do evil, and you rely on Jesus for your full purity (Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God)
  • You want to see healthy, genuine peace; amongst your family, community, nation, and world (Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God)
  • People look down on your faith or cause trouble for you (Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven)

If you can relate to even one of the above, you are blessed. Your worldview is accurate and truthful during these troubling times. Your eyes are open, your heart is tender.  Notice how each one of these attitudes is followed by a promise for the future. A high level of well-being will include dark times, but with the knowledge that a bright and hopeful future awaits. These promises might come to partial fruition today or tomorrow, but most likely we'll only reap the full benefit when we see God face to face. Now is not all there is. Something magnificent is on the way, and it's headed for all believers, from the brokenhearted to the merciful. You know how this story turns out, right? God wins.

You Are Blessed

Today, please know that you if you are feeling low about the state of our world, you are blessed. If you are feeling bewildered and disturbed by the evil that seems to lurk at every corner- please don't be discouraged.  These are exactly the attitudes Jesus picked out for special blessing. I would be willng to wager a bet that the most brokenhearted among us are the ones being prepared to stand up courageously for faith and goodness tomorrow. Are you ready?

Matthew 5:1-12 (NIV)

Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, and he began to teach them.

He said:

“Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
 Blessed are those who mourn,
    for they will be comforted.
 Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
    for they will be filled.
 Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart,
    for they will see God.
 Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

“Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
